After much deliberations and a long wait, Ajay Devgan has finally taken the plunge into the hot and happening world of web series on OTT platforms. He has made his debut with a Hotstar Special series Rudra The Edge Of Darkness which has received mixed responses from the audience. It is a remake of Idris Elba’s thriller show Luther and a shot-by-shot copy of it.

Ajay Devgan – a predictable performance

Ajay Devgan is predictable in his role as a cop

There is hardly anything new in his performance. How many times we have seem Ajay Devgan playing the role of a cop taking the law into his own hands. He has just repeated himself in the web series. While his intensity still remains intact, the Bollywood megastar didn’t look completely at ease in his new avatar on an OTT platform. He looks predictable playing a cop – something that he has done throughout his career. You will be disappointed if you are expecting anything different from Ajay Devgan. Its rather unfortunate that the actor of his calibre still chose to operate in a friendly territory even on a new platform.

Rudra The Edge Of Darkness trailer

Ashwini Kalsekar as Commissioner Deepali Handa, Esha Deol as Shaila Addagatla, Raashii Khanna as Dr Aliyah Choksi are anything but noteworthy. Atul Kulkarni and Ashish Vidyarthi, as expected, play their parts effortlessly.

Intense plot is the real hero

The real hero of Rudra The Edge of Darkness is its plot – fast paced, thrilling and leaving no chance to think anything beyond what is going on the screen. It is indeed a well-narrated thriller in which violence gels easily with the narrative. The portrayal of the protagonist as a layered individual is simply brilliant.

The plot comes to the rescue

The writing is so well that the show never fumbles over the top and some of the mediocre performances hide behind its superb writing. There is adequate drama for the audience to keep them entertained and engrossed in the show. The production is simply outstanding which makes it even more interesting.

The only regret – Ajay Devgan could have taken up a bigger challenge. After all, life is all about new stages, new challenges and new opportunities.
